IntroductionRecruitment is being conducted to fill multiple Correctional Officer positions in the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. The Correctional Officer‑Lateral is a journey level role that follows established procedures for receiving prisoners, maintaining discipline, and preventing escapes.DefinitionUnder general supervision, performs general prisoner custody for inmates of County detention facilities; and performs related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.Class CharacteristicsEmployees in this class are public officers as described in California Penal Code 831, responsible for following established procedures for receiving prisoners, maintaining discipline and preventing escapes. Supervision becomes more general as experience, knowledge and skill are gained. This class does not include active law‑enforcement duties and differs from the sworn officer classes.Typical DutiesReceives prisoners from law‑enforcement officers for detention, records personal property, conducts searches, photographs, fingerprints and assigns them to cells.Supervises inmates' daily activities including eating, bathing, recreation, counseling, rehabilitation and therapy programs; transports low‑security inmates.Releases prisoners on proper authorization and returns personal property.Collects and dispenses prisoner clothing; maintains clothing, linen and cleaning supplies inventories.Examines packages, letters and other items entering the jail, ensuring conformity to policy and removing contraband.Provides first responder care during medical incidents and arranges advanced treatment.Maintains records and reports of prisoner activities and conduct; uses data terminals for reporting and information retrieval.May lead other workers and provide security for personnel delivering services.May be assigned duties related to Training Officer, Classification Officer, Transportation Coordinator, K9, and Correctional Emergency Response Team.KnowledgeBasic human and deviant behavior, basic mathematics, general computer skills, language use and mechanics, and first aid.AbilitySupervise inmates during various activities; handle recreation equipment and clothing; interpret rules and regulations; maintain records; remain alert and react calmly in emergencies; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively and maintain confidence and emotional control; multi‑task and build effective working relationships.Physical/Mental RequirementsConstant standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, climbing stairs; occasional driving and lifting of individuals; must possess physical strength, coordination, endurance, and agility. Requires use of a computer, visual acuity, hearing, and ability to respond to hostile situations and emergency situations. Emotional resilience required due to frequent contact with hostile individuals, emergency situations, and exposure to trauma and death.
