The Community Services Department provides recreation, educational, and enrichment programs and services for residents of all ages. Distinguishing Characteristics
Under the direction of the Community Services Supervisor, the Crossing Guard promotes pedestrian safety by assisting students and other pedestrians at designated school crossings before and after school, and at other assigned times. Incumbents do not supervise other employees.
This position is responsible for assisting pedestrians in crossing streets using established crossing procedures, monitoring traffic and pedestrian activity, observing and reporting hazards, and promoting safe pedestrian behaviors. Crossing Guards serve as a visible safety presence within the community and support the orderly movement of pedestrians at designated crossing locations.
This role supports the Community Services Department and its partnerships with local schools by helping students and families navigate designated crossing areas and encouraging safe pedestrian practices.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Traffic and Pedestrian Operations
- Encourage compliance with pedestrian laws and safe crossing practices.
- Facilitate the orderly crossing of pedestrians at designated school crossings through the use of approved procedures, training, and equipment.
- Serve as a positive representative of the City when interacting with pedestrians, motorists, and the public.
- Communicate courteously, professionally, and respectfully with all individuals encountered during assigned shifts.
- Provide general information and assistance to the public as appropriate.
- Complete pedestrian tracking documentation, incident reports, and other required documentation as assigned.
- Report hazards and equipment issues promptly.
- Participate in program evaluations, safety reviews, and operational improvements as requested.
- Attend required meetings and trainings.
- Assist with special assignments related to pedestrian safety education and community outreach when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Departmental operations.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience working with children, schools, public safety, transportation, customer service, or closely related field.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, afternoons, Monday through Friday, and special events as assigned.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a First Aid/CPR/AED certification within six (6) months of employment.
Supplemental Information
Training Requirements
Training will be provided to the successful candidates for their roles as a Crossing Guard.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Prolonged standing and walking outdoors for extended periods; crossing streets repeatedly; reaching, bending, stooping, carrying, lifting, and transporting equipment up to 25 pounds; exposure to varying weather conditions; and maintaining visual and auditory awareness of surrounding traffic and pedestrians.
Work is performed primarily outdoors at designated school crossing locations and other assigned locations. Employees are exposed to varying weather conditions, vehicle traffic, noise, and regular interaction with students, families, motorists, and the public. Work schedules are generally aligned with school arrival and dismissal times and may include split shifts.
Additional Supplemental Information:
Candidates will be invited for an oral board interview, once sufficient number of qualified candidates have been reached. The City will send an email to those candidates with details regarding the oral board interview.
