    ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES
    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS annually provides direct care for over 600,000, unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of over $6.9 billion.

    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings. .

    DEFINITION:
    Performs journey-level steam fitting tasks in accordance with standard trade practices.

    Essential Job Functions

    Supervise apprentices and helpers.

    Installs piping for steam and hot water heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, fire sprinkler, pneumatic tube carrier, power, compressed air, hydraulic, fuel oil and control systems.
    Installs steam equipment such as boilers, burners, water heaters, radiators, heat exchangers, sterilizers and presses, and accessories such as pumps, governors, traps and valves.

    Diagnoses operating malfunctions and repairs equipment and piping systems.

    Installs, calibrates and repairs various pneumatic, electric and electronic instruments and controls.

    Checks installations for conformance with legal requirements and safety codes.

    Inspects water main fire hydrants, service lines, fire hose and extinguishers.

    Installs and repairs iron pipe railings, supports and frames.

    Maintains tools and equipment.

    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
    OPTION I: Five (5) years of experience in steam fitting work, including experience in a power plant and on hydraulic equipment, one year of which must have been in heating and air conditioning in building construction and one year of which must have been at the journey-level. J ourney-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

    OPTION II: Completion of a 5-year steam fitter apprenticeship program*.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required in order to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    VISION: Normal color perception.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION:
    *Applicants who expect to qualify under Option II, must include a legible photocopy of their apprenticeship training certificate.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of an oral interview which will assess the applicants job preparation, knowledge and skills, interpersonal effectiveness and oral communication, weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.


    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
