    Essential Job Functions

    A Helper, Electrica l assists in performing a combination of the following essential job functions:

    OPERATIONAL SERVICES : Assists in installing conduit and wiring on residential, commercial, industrial and traffic signal control systems; patrols traffic signals to make minor replacements or repairs; traces malfunctions in electrical circuits and makes minor repairs to lighting fixtures, illuminated street name signs, and controls including ballasts and lamps; assists with fabrication of traffic signal equipment for installation in the field including standards and indications for vehicle and pedestrian movements; operates small power tools, hydraulic benders, hammer drills, power saws, and pneumatic tools such as jack hammers and tampers; operates vehicle-mounted and aerial man-lifts; maintains tools and equipment in serviceable condition; assists with emergency calls on weekends and/or after hours; cleans work areas, as needed; drives automotive equipment to and from work sites; maintains work and supply records; understands, operates, and maintains basic hand tools; and assists with repairs to street lights, associated equipment, highway safety lights, traffic signal and street lighting standards, as needed.

    SEWER MAINTENANCE : Assists in inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, overhauling and installing power, control, instrumentation and lighting for wastewater pumping and treatment facilities; assists in inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, overhauling and installing electro-mechanic equipment in wastewater pumping and treatment facilities such as motors, pumps, compressors, blowers, mixers, valves, and related piping and appurtenances; performs routine inspections and maintenance, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to facilities and equipment; cleans and maintains work area and facilities; maintains work records, supplies, safety equipment, tools, and equipment; drives automotive equipment to and from work sites and delivers portable generators to sites and assists with connecting generators to supply emergency power; assists with emergency calls on weekends and/or after hours; and when necessary, work in small, dimly lit and wet confined spaces, and perform confined space entry procedures utilizing safety equipment such as: harnesses with tripod, gas detector, and ventilation blowers.

    WATERWORKS DIVISION: Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs/rewires control, power, and lighting circuits in potable water facilities such as water wells, reservoirs, pressure tanks, pumping plants and disinfection stations; works with and around water treatment chemicals; maintains work records and supplies; maintains vehicle tools and equipment; traces malfunctions in electrical circuits and performs minor repairs to equipment; changes out lighting fixtures; performs regular inspections, general maintenance, and repairs of water pumping stations, reservoirs, pressure regulating stations and chemical disinfection systems; works in small, dimly lit and wet confined spaces, and performs confined space entry procedures utilizing safety equipment such as: self contained breathing devices, safety harnesses with tripod, gas detector, and ventilation blowers; assists with emergency calls on weekends and/or after hours; works at heights greater than six feet with proper training and personal protection equipment; and drives to and from job sites.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Option I: One year of experience assisting in the installation, alteration, maintenance, or repair of electrical wiring systems, electro-mechanical equipment, elevators, or escalators.

    Option II: Completion of 600 hours of instruction in electrical, electro-mechanical, or electronics courses in an industrial education curriculum in a high school, college, the armed forces of the United States, or other recognized school. *

    VISION: Keen color perception.

    LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out job-related essential functions.

    LICENSE INFORMATION:

    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

    Physical Class IV - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:


    *Applicants who expect to qualify through the completion of 600 hours of instruction in electrical, electro-mechanic or electronics courses in an industrial education curriculum MUST attach a copy of the certificate of completion or transcripts showing proof of 600 hours of instruction in required courses within five (5) business days from filing. Examples of recognized schools: community colleges, trade tech school, etc.

    Applications submitted without transcripts or certificate, or license will be rejected as incomplete.

    Part II: Evaluation of Training and Experience, weighted 50%, assessing:

    • Experience installing, altering, or maintaining electrical equipment and systems.

    • Experience troubleshooting electrical equipment and systems.

    • Experience with various types of tools.

    Transfer of Scores:

    Applicants who have taken any identical written test part(s) for other exams within the last (12) months will have their written test scores for the identical test part(s) automatically transferred to this examination. Your scores will be transferred to the identical test part(s) and will not be allowed to re-take any identical test parts for at least 12 months.

    THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the list of eligible candidates accordingly.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
