    The Public Works Department is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services .     Position Duties

    Salary range for this classification is $ 74,380.8 0 - $ 90,417.60 annually. This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    The Department of Public Works is seeking to fill a vacant Facility Repair Worker position at the Central Service Yard within the Facilities Management Division. Under general supervision, this Facility Repair Worker will perform a wide variety of semi-skilled work in the repair of buildings and equipment at various City facilities . The incumbent also needs the ability to recognize the correct tool for the task and be familiar with the safe and effective use of power and hand tools of the carpentry, paint, and plumbing trades. This position works alongside the various trades consisting of carpentry, lock services, painting, and plumbing.

    Other duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

    • Work and communicate well with customers, including co-workers, other trades, client department personnel, management, and the general public .


    • Schedules and manages the work of contractors engaged in the maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities . Reviews and approves payments.


    • Prepares work orders for major repair and alterations and monitors progress and completion of projects.


    • Maintains records of repair equipment.


    • Maintain all work order details, status updates, labor applied, and contractor costs in City’s work order database.


    • Knowledge of fundamental provisions of various codes related to the maintenance and repair of facilities.


    • Minor construction and repair projects including wood and metal framing and including aspects of rough and finished carpentry.


    • Installation and repair of doors and windows (metal, wood, fiberglass) and related hardware.


    • Knowledge and experience in preparation of various surfaces, and paint finish applications, practices, and methods.


    • Follow written and oral instruction, interpret plans, construction drawings, and adhere to building codes and specifications to perform the work required .


    • Promote teamwork and work as part of a team, including taking the lead as well as a supporting role to complete projects.


    • Adopt appropriate safety working procedures.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of eighth grade and three (3) years of experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of buildings to include semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical work.

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history.

    • Communication Skills - communicates and listens effectively and responds in a timely , effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate , complete, current; well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form; can professionally communicate with all levels of staff including Directors and members of the City Council and City Manager’s Office.


    • Computer Skills - experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel, work order database system.


    • Customer Service - demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently in a timely , accurate , respectful, and friendly manner


    • Job Expertise - demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations.


    • Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills


    Additional qualifications include:

    • Knowledge of general materials, methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment at City facilities, including semi-skilled carpentry, electrical, painting and plumbing work.


    • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures necessary in building and equipment maintenance work.


    • Ability to use power tools and equipment safely.


    • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.


    • Ability to keep simple records and prepare routine reports.


    • Ability to set priorities for completion of projects.


    • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with other employees and with the public.


    • Knowledge of the fundamental provisions of various codes pertaining to the maintenance and repair of buildings involved in this type of work.


    • Ability to draw sketches and plans for assigned projects, estimate the materials required and record the time and materials used.


    Selection Process:

    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to all the job specific questions.
