7 days a week from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, handling nearly 60,000 tons of residential waste and recyclables annually. The
Solid Waste Facilities Manager is responsible for the daily operations of Convenience Centers, including managing the operating contractor and overseeing facility operations. This position also involves participating in capital improvement projects, coordinating equipment procurement and maintenance, addressing customer inquiries and concerns and managing the Trash Pass program along with other initiatives to prevent illicit use of the facilities. The ideal candidate will exhibit solid leadership and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
NOTE: Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record.About Our TeamWake County’s Solid Waste Management Division provides waste disposal and recycling services. The division manages various waste facilities, including active and closed landfills, a waste transfer station, residential convenience centers, household hazardous waste drop-off facilities and multi-material recycling drop-off facilities. The Solid Waste Management Division also provides an array of outreach and education programs, including the Feed the Bin school recycling program and 86it Anti-Litter Campaign.
The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field
- Three years of experience in solid waste management
- Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - Experience managing solid waste/recycling contracts
- Experience managing solid waste/recycling facilities
- Proficient in utilizing Microsoft, including Excel, Word and Teams
How Will We Know You're 'The One'? - Proficient and knowledgeable in managing contracts and contractors related to solid waste and recycling operations
- Ability to oversee facility operations and provide support for various solid waste programs and initiatives
- Skills and ability to respond to public inquiries in a professional and tactful manner, while effectively de-escalating situations as needed
- Ability to monitor and inspect work activities to ensure compliance with established procedures, methods and safety standards
- Ability to make necessary adjustments to standard operating procedures
- Knowledge in reviewing existing programs and analyzing cost data related to solid waste management to enhance efficiency
- Skills in collaborating with consultants, engineers and other local governments on diverse waste and recycling initiatives
