Out-of-Class experience will not be accepted for this examination.DEFINITION: Directs the operation of several swimming pools in an assigned geographic area.
Essential Job Functions- Inspects facility operations, property, equipment and personnel at each assigned pool on a regular basis to monitor compliance with State and County health and safety regulations and standards; visually checks purification system, pool decks and other surfaces, pool water, lavatory facilities, and pool equipment for cleanliness, damage, or defects; alerts pool manager to any deficiencies noted and follows up to ensure corrections are made.
- Reviews work schedules and records of time worked for all personnel, prepares performance evaluations on subordinate supervisors and reviews those prepared for lifeguard, locker room and clerical support staff.
- Provides ongoing training to pool managers to ensure proper maintenance and safe operation of the pools.
- Keeps records of daily pool operation and maintenance; notes deficiencies; and initiates corrective action.
- Reviews and approves schedules for recreational and instructional programs developed by assigned pool managers to ensure conformance to guidelines established by superiors.
- Observes lifeguarding practices to ensure enforcement of State codes and local provisions and observes swimming classes for quality and consistency of instruction; alerts pool manager to weaknesses in staff performance and initiates corrective action.
- Assists superiors in the planning and development of recreational and instructional programs at County pools and in planning, scheduling, and supervising local and regional swim meets.
- Serves as liaison to the Red Cross, local cities, school districts, and community groups to ensure the integrity of and promote the Department's aquatics program.
RequirementsSELECTION REQUIREMENTS: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:- OPTION 1 - 2 years (3,200 hours) as a Pool Manager* in Los Angeles County service
-OR-- OPTION II - 2 years (3,200 hours) of experience managing** a public swimming pool
Certification: - Certified Pool Operator Certificate
Instructor's Certification: - American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor's Certificate
- American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response Instructor's Certificate, which includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate and Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for Professional Rescuers
All certifications will be required before appointment to the position. COMMENTS:Rescue duties are not part of job. The class has administrative oversight of training standards, certification ensures they are up to date with changes in the industry.
LICENSE:A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS III - ModerateThis class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: *To qualify under this option, applicants MUST have status as evidenced by holding or having held such payroll title within the County of Los Angeles.
**Managing is defined as being responsible for pool operations, lifeguard staff, scheduling, training, and corrective action at one (1) or more pools. To qualify under this option, only experience outside of the County of Los Angeles will be considered.
Please note, experience from Option I and Option II cannot be combined.
Additional InformationADDITIONAL INFORMATION:EXAMINATION CONTENT:An oral interview covering training, experience, supervision, conflict management, interpersonal skills and general ability to perform the essential duties of the position,
weighted 100%.Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination to be added onto the list of eligible candidates.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
VACANCY INFORMATION:The resulting eligible list for this examination will be used to fill permanent vacancies within the Department of Parks and Recreation throughout Los Angeles County.
