    The General Services Agency is seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an Extra-Help (Part-Time) Housekeeper/Custodian. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. The individual will be a team player, reliable, detail-oriented, flexible and possess the skills and experience to perform a variety of cleaning tasks ranging from routine cleaning to those tasks requiring knowledge and use of industrial cleaning equipment and solutions used in cleaning and maintaining walls, floor surfaces, carpeting, furniture and fixtures.

    THE POSITION

    The General Services Agency Facilities Maintenance team is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining clean, safe, sustainable, and high-quality working environments for over 4,900 County employees. The department is currently looking to fill two vacancies. The Housekeeper/Custodian position is subject to shift hours and weekend work and may be eligible for shift differential compensation.

    This position is required to participate in a full background investigation with the District Attorney's office upon job offer.

    Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Craft/Maintenance/Institutional bargaining unit for labor relations purposes.

    Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.

    Typical Tasks

    • Empty and clean wastebaskets, ashtrays and other waste receptacles, and dispose contents of trash bin and reline trash cans;
    • Remove, clean and replace all window and cubicle drapes as necessary;
    • Wash and sanitize toilet bowls, washbasins, mirrors, windows, walls, glass doors and frames, drinking fountains, marble surfaces, etc.;
    • Vacuum, spot clean and shampoo carpets;
    • Sweep, strip-wax, damp mop, wax, and buff bathroom and office floors, building entrances, stairwells and hallways;
    • Operate heavy floor equipment, including buffers and scrubbers;
    • Clean, dust, polish and shampoo furniture;
    • Clean walls, doors and windows as needed;
    • Replenish bathroom sanitary supplies, including toilet paper, soap and paper towels;
    • Clean up spills and debris;
    • Dust or clean baseboards, light fixtures and clean air vents;
    • Arrange and straighten conference rooms by moving tables, desks, chairs, filing cabinets and other furniture as required;
    • Report all needed repairs and hazards to immediate supervisor;
    • Interact with customers and the public on a daily basis; and
    • Lock doors, close windows, observe and report any unusual circumstances to supervisor for security purposes.


    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

    KNOWLEDGE
    • Appropriate custodial equipment, supplies and solutions which are needed to perform specific custodial tasks; and
    • Modern and effective methods and techniques used for cleaning and maintaining building fixtures and facilities, such as shampooing carpets, stripping floor wax and disinfecting bathroom fixtures.

    SKILLS/ABILITIES
    • Efficiently operate light to moderate heavy cleaning equipment;
    • Physically perform job tasks such as push, pull or lift tables, desks, chairs, etc.;
    • Understand and efficiently follow simple oral and/or written instructions from supervisor regarding custodial duties;
    • Perform custodial duties with increasingly minimal directions from supervisor;
    • Read at a level sufficient to understand poison warnings and ingredient listings on container or solution labels; and
    • Write out supply requisitions.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE


    • Six (6) months of full-time, professional janitorial experience performing general custodial duties.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Three (3) months of professional experienc e operating floor care equipment.

    EXAMINATION PROCESS
    Most County recruitments consists of the steps detailed below and are governed by Merit Principles. The examination process ensures that all applicants are given the same opportunity to gain employment within Stanislaus County.

    • Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
    • Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
    • Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months but may be extended up to eighteen months.
