    Definition and Class Characteristics

    The County of Nevada, Building Inspection Department is offering an internship opportunity in partnership with the Nevada Joint Union High School District. Students enrolled in the CTE program are welcome to apply!

    This position will be hosted in the Nevada County Building Department and will report directly to the Supervising Plans Examiner.

    Functions of Agency/Department:

    The Nevada Building Department is responsible for the enforcement of the California Building Code Standards. The department is divided into three functions: Front counter, plan check and inspections. The department ensures that all newly constructed buildings adhere to minimum code standards to preserve life and property.

    Intern Duties and Responsibilities:

    Under general supervision, assists the Building Department staff in performing the operations of the department. This may include filing, answering phones, reading construction plans and support documents, plan checking, working with a permit technician and learning about minimum building code standards during inspections.

    Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Plan check deck, garage and other simple plan types.
    • Accompany field inspectors during inspections.
    • Work with a permit technician at the front counter.

    Candidates selected for the position would be asked to perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels to enhance interns' familiarity and skillset in Building Department operations.

    Educational Requirements, Skills, Training, or Qualifications:

    This Internship is designed for students interested in building code, construction, drafting, structural and civil engineering and architecture.
    • Previous work experience is not required
    • Must have a neat appearance, be detail-oriented, reliable, good written and oral communication skills.
    • Ideal candidates should have strong organizational skills and experience with conducting general research.
    • Enthusiastic about working with the community and able to work collaboratively in a team setting.
    • Students will be expected to communicate scheduling needs clearly.


    Time Commitment:

    Minimum of two school periods per day or 4 hours per week, 2 days per week during each school semester. Hours will be scheduled in (2) hour blocks in alignment with the school bell schedule. A typical schedule would require students to participate from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, Tuesday and Thursday.

    Benefits of participating in an internship:

    This program prepares interns to contend for entry-level inspection, plan check and permit technician positions. Through participation in the program, interns will acquire hands-on knowledge and skills related to:
    • Understanding the California Building Code Standards.
    • Reading and interpreting construction plans, engineering calculations, solar plans, fire sprinkler plans, etc.
    • Interacting with the public at the counter.
    • Conducting field inspections of buildings under construction.
    • Building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical trade practices.
    • Drafting construction plans.
    • Use of computer programs related to permit tracking.
    • Build their resume and explore career options and employment opportunities.
    • Gain an understanding of the local government workforce and culture.
    • Develop communication and interpersonal skills to aid in future job interviews.

    Interns who are earning school credit through an educational program may be eligible for a $298.00 stipend per semester, no more than $599.00 per calendar year upon completion of the internship (Board Resolution 21-110).

Summer temperatures are typically mild, with average highs near 85 degrees in July. Rain in January typically averages ten inches per year and the highest elevations receive an annual average of 206 inches of snow. 

     

    Recreation:

    Scenic trails, alpine lakes, the Yuba River and the Sierra Nevada Mountains all support numerous recreation activities, including skiing, biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, hunting and backpacking. With a calendar packed with street fairs, festivals, art exhibits, local theater and children’s activities, visitors and locals can experience small-town life without having to forgo indulgence in pleasures more typical of an urban setting. 

     

    Arts and Culture:

    Nevada County is a creative hotspot in the Sierra Nevada, offering an array of experiences, including concerts, film festivals, street fairs, dance performances, poetry readings, studio tours and galleries. The county also has numerous venues for performing arts, many of which are historic settings. The arts have a large economic impact, which has become a vital component to life in Nevada County.
