Job SummaryThe Nevada Department of Corrections is hiring for a Senior Psychiatrist in Las Vegas, Ely, or Lovelock. Under administrative direction, plans, directs and participates on providing medical care to the mentally ill or mentally disabled; may supervise a subordinate staff providing professional medical services or patient care; and does related work as required. Performs psychiatric evaluations by reviewing data from referral services and client record; interviewing family of client to obtain additional date; conducting psychiatric examination for client by interview to elicit subjective information and to observe the client’s mood, speech, perceptivity, thought process and intellectual functions; evaluating the data acquired and deciding whether a mental disorder is present and if so, what are the most appropriate recommendations for the treatment of the disorder; and stating recommendations for the treatment management of the client. The purpose of the psychiatric evaluation is to determine the most probable cause of the client’s disorder for use as a working diagnosis and indicative treatment. Senior Psychiatrists typically report to the Medical Director. Clinical work is carried out independently and reviewed periodically by means of a peer review, case conferences and related mechanisms. Consultation/education activity is also conducted independently consistent with agency needs. These activities are largely governed by state and federal laws regarding client rights and services to the mentally ill. Department, agency and program guidelines, policies and procedures; and medical ethics. Special assignments and requests are communicated and may be reviewed by the Medical Director.
Essential QualificationsGraduation from a medical school approved by the Nevada Board of Examiners, completion of one year internship in an approved hospital and two years of practice in the field of psychiatry and certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Must possess a valid license to practice Medicine from the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners at the time of appointment is required; and must be maintained throughout employment without interruption.
Job DutiesThe Nevada Department of Corrections Medical Division is committed to providing quality, evidenced based health care using an efficient system of managed care that is professional, humane and appropriate and is supportive of the overall mission of the Nevada Department of Corrections. Each major institution has a medical and dental clinic and some infirmary capacity. There are two institutions with on-site acute care infirmaries with approximately 91 infirmary beds. The medical staff engages in over 600 patient care contacts each day statewide. The Medical Division provides primary care at each institution and on-site clinics are held periodically with outside specialists such as cardiologists, surgeons, and gastroenterologists. The Medical Division also provides hospitalization in community hospitals when necessary.
